Lower Tweed River. Uki swimming hole. The town of Uki fringes the Lower Tweed River along a steep bank. A little upstream is a spot known as Platypus corner. Slightly further up is the junction with the Rowlands Creek, where the road bridge passes overhead. In this junction of river and creek, completely shaded by giant trees, the water is crystal clear, and forms wonderful and safe swimming holes. Rapids occur both upstream and downstream and on hot summer days the local kids (and their parents) will be found here sheltering from the heat. In all the hustle and bustle of city life its pretty magic to think that the kids can still safely go down to the local river and spend hours in a cool, clean and natural river environment.
Note that the Platypus is known as a very shy creature, but especially, will only live in clean and unpolluted environments. The river is a special place for man and animal, as we have frequently seen this unique mammal on quiet afternoons from the bank.
