clay images by lisa gair
I use clay to shape the pictures I see in my mind,
they represent feelings and concepts
that I could not possibly articulate in words,
although words are often an inspiration,
a story ... a poem ... a lyric ... a conversation ... a thought
a turn of phrase can bring a picture to mind
clay allows me to give it a material form.
I do not question these images, but let them rise
I feel no need to be knowledgeable about their origins
as the work emerges I am absorbed
and on finishing I am often intrigued
there is no deliberate, pre-digested artistic statement
in the end I am a viewer like anyone else
to work with clay is to be in a relationship with it
and
in my case it is a love affair
humorous ... challenging ... exciting ... imperfect ... essential...then abandoned.
