Uki ...timber town The village of Uki is situated just below the slopes of Mt Warning, right at the central plug of a vast extinct volcano. The so called caldera, is rimmed with jagged peaks in a dramatic and undulating landscape where the rivers run wide, tortured paths through forests and rolling green hills. The rainfall is abundant, the soil is volcanic red and the lush growth of rainforest trees attest to the underlying fertility of this place.
In the early days, fabulous Cedar forests were felled and floated down river to eventually reach Edinburgh or London, and be turned into less fabulous furniture. Early this century dairy farming was common and is still viable in some parts. Hence the wonderful old butter factory from the 1930s that forms the hub of this little town.
Today, Uki is an idyllic retreat with many creative souls scattered around the hills and through the town.
The locals are friendly and unpretentious. They pretend they don’t even realise they are living in a natural paradise. Visitors blow in and blow out and refresh themselves and drink in the sights and sounds, foods, artistic experiences, markets and music. And we hope they go home refreshed and reinforced and remember their Cloudcatcher experience.
